Egyptians now call this city in the Qena province Dandarah, though archaeologists all refer to it as Dendera.
It is situated on the great bend in the Nile, right where the river heading north-east towards Luxor and Thebes then turns south-west, in the direction of Hiw.
The ancient name of Dendera was Inuet, which became Tentyra for the Greeks.
Inuet was the capital of a "nome" of Upper Egypt, though there is nothing visible today of the ancient city.
The deity of the region was Hathor, the cow-goddess, or "Hat-hor", the "House of Horus".
